Chuitinamit Environmental Centre CEC is a vibrant, hands-on environmental project in the heart of the Mayan communities living around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Focussed on the endangered freshwater resource of this unique lake, CEC is involving people in finding practical solutions to rebalance the fragile interrelationship between communities and their environmental surroundings.
CEC takes a holistic approach, recognising the interconnection between people's environment, identity, community mental health, cultural and economic organization. Our project is a local response to a wider global environmental concern. It is a ecologically conscious of the limits of natural resources and aims to find practical, sustainable solutions; nurtured by Mayan ancestral knowledge and the exchange of innovative ideas and environmental technologies transferable from other contexts.
It is based on human and social values which enable individual and community empowerment; strengthening people's capacity to take inclusive, community-led decisions according to real needs and benefits to the community. CEC will develop through ideas exchanges, practical workshops and demonstration sites. It will be shaped by people's ideas and involvement; in constructing the future in the present.
